Are Heated Mattress Pads Worth It?

May 17, 2025

Are heated mattress pads worth it? A thousand times yes. Keep reading, to find out everything you need to know.

If you got caught by surprise just now  (like, “What? I thought there were only blankets!), keep reading. You are gonna be soooo happy.

HEATED MATTRESS PADS–SHOULD YOU BUY ONE?

Hang on. Why are we talking about heated mattress pads when Summer is just around the corner? ☀️

Clever consumer, it’s simply good shopping!  No one is buying heated mattress pads in June. And stores are trying to reduce inventory and make room for inflatable backyard kiddie pools. (I’ll remind you in December to buy that!)

This time of year, you’ll find heated mattress pads on our favorite designer rack. Who’s that?  Clearance, my friend. 😄

And are heated mattress pads worth it? Absolutely. When it’s cold, in the middle of winter, you can preheat your bed and climb into cozy warm sheets. Who wouldn’t like that?

They don’t move around like electric blankets. You put them on the bed, and you’re done. In the Summer, ignore them. They’ll be ready for use again when it gets cold.

These heated mattress pads have come a long way. Flat wires that are super flexible. Controllers with extra features, like automatic shutoff.

ARE HEATED MATTRESS PADS HEALTHY?

Give me just 30 seconds to say this: Turn that thermostat down in the wintertime. Some people say 65, some say 60.

Do what you can live with. Your respiratory tract will thank you. Your babies will be healthier. We don’t need furnace heat drying us out while we sleep.  Use the mattress pad to get the bed warm. Then turn it way down to just barely warming. It will stay there all night. You’ll sleep well and you’ll breathe well.

(Put the babies in a sleep sack. They will stay cozy.)

WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT HEATED MATTRESS PADS

Well, they are fitted to your mattress size. Which is way better than a blanket.  A heated mattress pad fits over your mattress like a traditional pad. There’s the elastic stretchy side all the way around that will hold it in place. It contains thin wires that gently warm the bed from beneath instead of on top like a blanket.

Plug the wire connector to the fitting on the blanket, then stretch it over the mattress. Set up each controller in a convenient place. The whole thing plugs into a standard wall outlet, and you’re done.

What Do You Do With Your Old Mattress Pad?

Nothing was wrong with my old mattress pad, I just wanted the heat. So I put the new electric mattress pad directly on the mattress. Then I put my own mattress pad on over that. Then the fitted sheet and so on.

I really don’t want to wash this thing, at least not frequently. That’s the thing that shortens its life. I feel like a nice pad on top helps to preserve it.

For bigger beds, the  heated mattress pad comes with two controllers. 😄 This may be the most important piece of information. Wifey can control her own side, Hubby can control his.

It Comes With Instructions

The package will show you how to set it all up. And once you get it arranged, you test the blanket to be sure it works, then turn it off and kind of forget it until cold weather.

It helps to know exactly what order to do things in. So read the information. It tells you not to hang the controllers by the cords, and things like that.

Why It’s Worth Buying:

1. Say Goodbye to Cold Nights
Cold winters no longer mean climbing between freezing sheets. Heated mattress pads warm the bed evenly, making it cozy and inviting.

2. Energy-Efficient Comfort
A mattress pad uses far less electricity than trying to warm your entire house, and keeps you warm where it matters most—right in bed.

3. Soothing Relief for Aches and Pains
Some say that people with arthritis or back pain find heated mattress pads provide therapeutic relief.

4. Better Sleep Quality
Instead of shivering for the first few minutes, you’ll go right to sleep.

5. Smart Features
Most heated mattress pads include features like programmable timers, automatic shutoff, and dual-zone settings. You can use it all night, or just long enough to “preheat” your bed before climbing in.

BUYING A HEATED MATTRESS PAD

We know about electric blankets. Even electric throws.  But this invention is so much better. A game changer.

It’s right up there with remote controls and pressure washers.

Here’s the truth:

The first time I knew there was such a thing, I stumbled on it by accident. I was perusing my designer area (you know, Clearance).  There was a beautiful box with a Sunbeam brand electric mattress pad in it. 😲

An electric mattress pad.  Heated.  For me.  On sale.

(pause…)

You know how this is. Your eyes widen. You get just a little taller. Your face looks like “How can I not buy this?”

How could I not know about heated mattress pads?

And it’s done, quicker than you can call accounting to get a purchase order. Just kidding. I’m retired. I am accounting.

Are heated mattress pads worth it?  Yes, yes, and yes.

So let’s talk money.

HEATED MATTRESS PAD PRICING

If we were talking generally, on the porch (like right now), I’d say these things can get pricey. Two hundred dollars or more for a nice one. King size is more expensive, naturally.

But that’s why you’re here! You don’t have to pay that. That’s what I’m so excited about.

In the off season, you can enjoy the luxury of time and truly shop. Play the coupon game, or whatever you typically do to get a good deal.

The first one I bought was around $70. It was almost 50% off.  That’s kind of exciting.

Finally, after a number of years, the heating power began to wind down, and it was time to look again. Which I did just last month.

And of course I got the perfect storm of savings: the sale price, the 40% off, the cash back, or whatever. Yes, the perfect deal trifecta we all wait for.  Again, the price I paid was around $75 which is considerably less than the regular price. (Whatever that is 😄.) This time I got the Biddeford Heated Mattress Pad from Kohls.

If you are considering purchasing a heated mattress pad, read reviews and really take your time. Amazon has an amazing selection. Refine your search and pay attention to the particulars.

Read The Reviews for Heated Mattress Pads

Reading the reviews is sometimes helpful. Sometimes not.

You know what? A lot of people probably end bad days there in the reviews, letting it all out. Although I appreciate an honest warning about a misleading product description, I sometimes worry about those negative reviewers. Once they get the whole story told, you realize it doesn’t have much to do with the actual product. 🫤 You know what I mean. You have to disregard the ones who complained their dog ate the cord, the box was delivered in the rain, or they got a speeding ticket on the way home.

(The dual-zone is a must for us, but I really feel bad for the person who thought it was a duel zone. Who would ever get good sleep if you had to duel every night?)

Anyway, you know by now I’m totally in favor of heated mattress pads. I think you will be, too.

Is a Heated Mattress Pad Worth the Investment?

Absolutely! A heated mattress pad offers:

  • Enhanced Comfort: Enjoy a warm bed from the first minute.

  • Energy Efficiency: Lower your heating bills by using the pad instead of turning up the thermostat.

  • Improved Sleep Quality: No more waking up cold halfway through the night.
