Toy Storage using Lack Tables from Ikea

What do you do with all those toys? There is never enough space, and it’s hard to find dependable ways to keep them sorted.

I’ve got two answers that go together like peanut butter and jelly:

Rolling bins under tables

A simple little LACK table from Ikea, and a very handy rolling bin from At Home.

Fill the bin up with toys, and roll it under the table.  Yes, it’s a $33 setup ($12.99 for the table, $19.99 for the bin), times three for my arrangement, but SO convenient! The bins are generous, and you have the tabletop for more bins with more toys. Which you know you need.

What’s nice about this kind of solution is the versatility. We’ve moved these things several times, to accommodate whatever was happening at the time. It makes a nice end table for blankets. There’s a picture in my September storage post called Household Essentials That Rock.

Rolling bins underneath, sorted smaller bins on top.

I’m showing you my pictures. By now you realize I’m not a photographer.

With 3 of the LACK tables, and 3 of the rolling bins, I created a lot of storage in a small space. The children can reach everything easily. They can roll the bins out and play where they like.  Clean-up is a breeze.  For me, of course, is what I mean.

On top here I used several bins including a cute one from a fundraiser (first one on the left). I love to shop for bins and baskets. The other four boxes are my fabric-covered diaper boxes. I used black wooden tags, decoupaged scrapbook paper onto them, then added adhesive numbers and letters.

Fabric-Covered Diaper Boxes

I love the covered diaper box idea. The boxes are so sturdy, and I use upholstery fabric (from the fabric outlet) which is also sturdy.

Check out my tutorial for fabric-covered boxes if you want. For some of these, I even used a grommet kit I got at Harbor Freight to dress them up.

That’s a “wrap”!

This little system has been working for us for about 5 years now. Start looking, because sometimes those little tables go on sale at Ikea.

If you don’t have an Ikea or At Home near you, maybe you can order these. Or maybe this project idea will still get your wheels turning (get it?) for storing toys in rolling bins.

Look out for enthusiastic bin pushers!

There is a sad little truth here: The back of the rolling bins can did scratch the wall. They have a wire frame. If you want to secure your LACK tables together with a strip of wood across the back, it can stop the bins from reaching the wall. They will stick out a little more in front, but your wall will be safe.

    1. Yay! I hope she gets to try it. Something we’ve been doing this week: the kid-sized tables can be borrowed for other uses, then returned. Thanks for reading.💛
