What to do out of school?

School is closed for COVID??

As COVID-19 approaches our neighborhoods, extra precautions are in order.  The first line of defense, social distancing, is one we can support — no forced vaccines, no relocations, just slowing down on community contact until the threat passes.

But now you’re faced with some choices.

I won’t say “Do not worry” because you might actually need to.  A little.  Maybe you are a full-time worker, and your children have no caretaker for the school hours. Or, maybe you have a sick person. Also, no doubt this has interrupted important plans.

I’m sorry.

I can’t solve those problems.  Maybe you’re just wondering what you will do with your children for an indefinite period of time.  Take a look at the suggestions below.  And don’t be afraid to go to our friend, Google, for more ideas.

Some things to do out of school:

Some people will say to create a schedule.  Honestly, I can see why this would work.  Schoolteachers know that you always have the next activity beginning before little ones can start thinking of what to get into while they wait.  Keep it moving, they say.

Maybe a rough outline of the day would help.  It probably won’t hurt.

If it’s about making choices, you may be considering these.

Sleep late? Or get up at regular time?

Eat breakfast at a reasonable time.

Indoor play activities may be necessary due to weather.

Outdoor activities are great for running off that energy.

It’s not unreasonable to have quiet time after lunch. Refreshing for all.

And maybe hopping in the car to run an errand is a nice change of pace. Even if it’s just to the car wash.

When you’re not rushed, bath time can last a little longer, and bedtime stories can be more leisurely.

Decide if staying up a few minutes late (with no school) is going to be okay, or not.

10 Things To Do Out of School

Bet I know what you’re thinking:

That still did not solve my problem! What is it we will do for these hours?

Let me offer ten general suggestions.

These are great for school holidays, summer breaks, or rainy days. Or worldwide quarantines.

Remember:  Have a plan, announce it, get things together, and keep it interesting.

First, do meals at the table differently.

That alone can change the mood.  Use special plates for a meal.  Make pancakes together.  Cut food into shapes, or serve different foods in small bowls.  Got any leftover paper party plates? Now is the time!

Second, make a tent.

If you have a tent or teepee, get it out. If you don’t, just grab a large sheet and drape it over whatever you can position — dining room chairs, old science fair backboards, anything tall and stable.

Separate tents can be very helpful for testy children.

Inside the tent, the supplies can be tailored to the game. Is it a fort or hideout? A boxcar on a train? Let the ideas develop and go with it. Supply appropriate snacks, and maybe a phone or tablet. Use flashlights, walkie talkies, stuffed animals, even books.

Or set it up to view the television and watch a movie.

Third, review your board games and puzzles.

If it’s been a while, maybe someone has grown to the next level and can play a game or work a puzzle they couldn’t before.

Five, do an outdoor project together.

Maybe it’s time to get your potting soil into the outdoor pots, maybe even plant something.  Do you need a hole somewhere? Weeds pulled?  Give someone a shovel they can handle and pull up a chair.

Six, do an indoor project together.

Make something with paint or clay, try preparing a snack recipe together, or teach a new skill.

Seven, Read.

Really.  Read a new book. Or an old one. Start a chapter book by reading aloud, continue it each day. Sometimes this is a new habit that needs to be “warmed up” and coaxed a bit. But children love to be read to. It’s so healthy.

Eight, Research something interesting.

Look online and find out about a different country, or the ocean floor, or dinosaurs, or gemstones, or factories. Maybe afterward you can make a book or a model, or color a picture, or plan a meal.

Nine, Go to a park.

Take your hand wipes, maybe meet a friend, and have fun.  Whether there’s a germ threat or not, playgrounds aren’t sanitary.  When you’re finished you need to wash the bird poo and the squirrel fur off your hands. Always.

Ten, just play.

Yep.  Ride bikes, roll around in the grass, squirt water guns, use some sidewalk chalk, or push little trucks around and make loud noises. Use a long rope to make a shape on the ground — a rocket, a plane, or a ship.

You may find the little ones are delighted to enjoy these activities and may ask to repeat them. That’s a double win, right? And save a few ideas for later, setting a great pattern of solving the boredom.

Together Time

Watching TV out of school
Cartoon Grammye Transparent Heart Hands

TV Time doesn’t have to be a parenting crime.

Toy Story 4 is still new, sort of.  Best news: Frozen 2 will be released streaming on Disney Plus on Sunday 3/15/20.  They are doing this for families, three months earlier than originally promised.  Thanks, Disney!

Watching a movie together is still together, right?

I’ve also got a list of great shows by ages here, just in case you haven’t heard of them.  Links are to YouTube, for you to get some instant information!

Cute baby picture

Sweet shows for babies:

On YouTube, listen to Jewel singing Brahms Lullaby.

Have you heard of Gigglebellies? So cute for little ones.  Sweet songs. No villains, no bad manners. Tons of songs.

Gotta mention Praise Baby.  Kind of older songs, very calm, so interesting to babies.

Kids playing together

Fun shows for toddlers:

Super Simple Songs. So many of these to hear, all so helpful and gentle. Here’s a gentle night-time one

Blippi.  He continues to grow in popularity, and you learn a lot watching his videos! This one is a fire truck video. Enjoy.  He has a channel!

Little Baby Bum videos are great fun. (A lot like the Super Simple Songs. Just sweet and fun.) Look at this one on washing hands. Watch on Netflix.

little, truck, toy

If your boy loves a truck, you’re in luck.

If you want endless truck videos, try Twenty Trucks (Here’s a good first: after the theme song, you’ll learn all about an excavator — with a fun song. Or listen to the beach cleaner song. Then many more.) There’s a website, or see it on Amazon.

Mighty Machines is another great series.  Try this one about trucks

Learning about things doesn’t have to be like going to school.  We love the series, City In The Sky, a three-part educational miniseries about the airline industry. This is a PBS series.

And try the “Lots and Lots” videos on many vehicles/industries (airplanes, rockets, trucks, etc.) Here’s one on rockets. Watch it on Amazon.

Relax and have fun.

About these days at home: I’m not saying it won’t be a challenge. It probably will be.

But don’t let your frustration make you impatient with your family. Try to wrap everything up with a can-do attitude, knowing at the end of this time you will have made lots of memories.

One sweet childhood memory I have is playing in the rain. Our mom not only let us, she joined us! We filled up our play dishes with water from the downspouts, and just let the game take us along.

I’ve seen my grandchildren thrilled because they got to eat lunch on a beach towel spread on the ground (or on the kitchen floor).

Do something unusual, just for today, and let your kids enjoy two things:  doing it, and remembering it.

Go ahead. Relax, take just a minute to see it with their eyes, and then engineer the moment.
