Easy Easter Basket Gift Ideas

Maybe “formula” is not the word you are expecting for creating Easter baskets.

But what if a formula is the answer to your questions?

Let’s see —

  • Do you get the same kinds of candy for your children each year?
  • Do you rush through the “Easter” aisles just in time to throw together a collection of toys and candy?
  • Does that plastic grass stray into every crevice in your home?
  • Is there a huge disconnect between what’s in the basket and the real Easter?

If you answered “yes” to any of these, maybe the formula is the cure.

You’ll be relieved to know it’s not complicated.

The good news? Now you don’t have to spend valuable time in the dollar store trying to make the momentary inventory work for you.

I’m not dogging the dollar store. I love it.  In fact, the suggestions you find here may send you straight to the dollar store — but with a plan!

The “Magic” Formula

for Easy Easter Baskets

Candy

+ Toys

+ Something Meaningful

+ Something Useful

That’s it. The secret formula. 4 items that come together as a complete Easter gift basket!

Here’s how to get it done:

Start with an overall budget. Then maybe you’ll think of one thing you’re certain about in one of these categories. Then gather items in the different categories until you’re done!

When you use these 4 categories to “compose” the gift basket for your children, you’ll be

  1. Intentional about your gift.
  2. Systematic about your shopping.
  3. Satisfied with the value of your effort.

The Easter basket you create will be exciting, beautiful, and pleasing to the recipient.

(Translation: More items to enjoy, less to throw away!)

My suggestion?  Read all the ideas. Then, focus first on one category: the meaningful, or the useful, or the toy. Pick one thing you can really be excited about. Then build around it.

Let’s take one quick look at each category, starting with Something Meaningful.

SOMETHING MEANINGFUL

Try an Easter book. A real one about real Easter. I’ll share some beautiful suggestions with you.

There are some Easter toys and games that are also great ideas.

And since it’s Easter, if your child doesn’t have a Bible this is a great time to give them one that’s age appropriate.

Maybe you can give a keychain or a bracelet with a special message.

Something Meaningful.

Next, we will look at Something Useful.

SOMETHING USEFUL

Something Useful isn’t always a toy, or a book, or clothes. But it can be!

Your container is an easy choice for the “something useful”. Since kids rarely are willing to let you throw away the tattered basket, why not use something they can put to good use?

A sturdy plastic tub or bin can always find a place. Hinged decorative boxes are great for holding little treasures.  Even an open umbrella (upside down) can serve as a basket.

Useful doesn’t have to be a container. It can be a library card, tickets to an event, or a gift card to a favorite store.

If you’ve got an outdoorsy play-in-the-dirt kind of child, maybe a gardening project could be a part of your gift.

Additionally, don’t rule out other useful items such as hair bows, cute underwear or socks, even a watch.

One mom gives her kids their new swimsuit and beach towel in their Easter basket each year.

And you can find tutorials on Pinterest to fold those beach towels into cute bunnies or baskets. Amazing.

Something Useful.

And the next category, Toys, is usually the one the children are excited about. (Or maybe Candy.😄)

TOYS

From small to large, think of seasonal toys (Spring/Summer) that you’re giving at exactly the right time.

Bubble toys are always fun for children, and there are lots of machines and devices that go way beyond the little plastic ring in the bottle. Kids love spinning plastic pinwheels, too. Get some to play with, then stick them in the garden. Even wind chimes make a great gift. We just don’t usually think of kids when we see them.

It’s so easy to find really cute stuffed toys this time of year! And there’s no reason you can’t get a character toy or a dump truck.

If you’re feeling more ambitious, a bike, scooter or a water table is a great gift this time of year.

One year, we got the grandboys a collection of balls for outdoor play — a soccer ball, kickball, basketball, football, baseball, and more. It was a hit, for sure.

CANDY

(Parent secret:) Now that the other gifts have made your celebration gift special, you can get by with a little less candy than you first thought. That’s a win for everybody!

And you can throw in some single-serve items that will round out lunch boxes for a week or so — cookies, fruit gummies, chips, etc.  Those individual packs.  Who says they only get candy? Give them candy plus other treats!

Or popcorn packs. Kids love popcorn and the promise of a movie night.

But candy.

What’s the tip of the week?

It’s a four-letter word: Time.

They’re not making any more of it, right?

The tip is to be a good steward of your time. Not trying to make you feel bad, just reminding you that your presence is a treasure to those around you. Your children consider time their currency. It’s how you invest in them.

Making time to truly “be” with others is a challenge for moms, for women. I hope you are able to enjoy the moments with your family, and that the time you spend together is pleasant.
