Overwhelmed with this election season? Me, too. What Do I Pray For? Here’s a prayer for our nation as we go to the polls. (Free printable prayer is below.)
(This topic is #6 in a series. The list of all the posts in the series is at the end.)
Let’s get right to it:
WHAT DO I PRAY FOR?
PRAY FOR GOD.
Pray that God reigns in our lives visibly before the whole world as the Creator, King, and Redeemer.
Pray that love for God among believers is increased.
Pray that hunger for God’s truth opens up his message for all.
Pray that worship reaches God’s presence as our offering.
PRAY FOR YOURSELF.
Pray for your own rusty heart, the heart that has been damaged by distractions and trials.
Pray that God conditions you to function as a powerhouse of prayer.
Pray that God sends his word to you from every direction.
Pray that your ability to reach other people is blessed and multiplied.
Pray that your own self discipline will be prominent in your thinking.
Pray that the light of Christ will shine from your life.
PRAY FOR OTHERS.
Pray that collective anger will be dispersed.
Pray that disagreement will be addressed with reason.
Pray that clarity will emerge from chaos.
Pray that those in pain and confusion and disappointment will cry out to God.
Pray that those in darkness will be shown a great light.
PRAY FOR OUR NATION.
Pray that God covers us with his hand of righteousness.
Pray that every believer looks to God for direction, security, and salvation.
Pray that leaders are confronted with the truth of good and evil, and that they devote themselves to exposing both.
Pray that we show ourselves before other countries as world leaders in goodness, civility, humanitarianism, and peace.
Pray that the presence of God becomes the mast and mainsail of our country.
PRAY FOR THE CHURCH.
Pray that the Church rises up before unbelievers, undefeated and victorious.
Pray that preachers devote themselves to proclaiming the gospel.
Pray that the believers, the living Church, will go out into the world and do the same.
Pray that correction takes place in our policies and our lives.
WHEN SHOULD WE PRAY?
PRAY TODAY.
Right now.
- We don’t need to wait for others to pray.
- We don’t need to take a day off.
- We don’t need to postpone it.
I confess that I have not prayed as often or as deeply as I should. I have been too brief, too hurried, and too shallow.
I confess that a prompt to pray is often the single urge to stop and truly speak to my Father. Otherwise, I find myself “too busy.”
This is my prompt and yours.
Please ask at least one person today to join you in praying for our election, our nation, and our Church.
Text someone, or make a phone call, or forward this post, or share this post.
Then,
PRAY THIS AGAIN TOMORROW.
and
PRAY THIS AGAIN WEDNESDAY.
and
PRAY THIS AGAIN THE NEXT DAY.
Because God is still God every single day.

Please know that it’s okay to actually read your prayer. Sometimes we feel a little guilty if we can’t compose the perfect spoken prayer.
I feel that way every day, even though I know God is not fixing his eyes on the print. He’s looking at my heart.
As I meet with the Lord, I will read and share my list with him, and quiet myself to listen and rest in his embrace before finishing. I’ll do this as often as time allows. When there is only a minute or two, I’ll simply return to the Lord thank him for his providence.
Our recent series has covered a number of the challenges we face in prayer, and you are invited to come and explore any of them when you’re ready.
