Do you know you’re thirsty? Sometimes you don’t. The Bible actually has a lot to say about thirst. It matters.
IT’S HOT. ARE YOU THIRSTY?
Just asking if you’ve got mixed feelings about Summer. About the heat, the yard work, and school being out. Because you have to adjust.
Here’s the thing: everything’s different during the summer — sleep, activity, work, chores, everything.
And it looks different, feels different. Days are already in the 80’s in Georgia.
THEY KNOW THEY’RE THIRSTY
And little humans look for water. Like upright furless labrador retrievers, they run toward puddles, garden hoses, and rain. They gallop and roll through sprinkler fountains. They lap ice water from big cups. Willing to wash the car every day, water plants, or fill up anything with water outdoors. They just know that water makes it better.
They don’t care about the source, and they take whatever amount they can get. A little, a lot, a trickle or a river.
They know their thirst.
THIRSTY FOR WATER
Would those little people be equally happy if I replaced the water in their cups with styrofoam packing peanuts? Would they be refreshed if I filled their plastic pool with pine cones? What if the garden hose gave hot air instead of cool water?
The answer is so obvious. They don’t need those things. Because they won’t bring relief. They know their thirst is for water.
The need is built in to their being, increased by the circumstances, and relieved by the right thing: water.
Those awful substitutes, I wouldn’t do any of those things. I’d give them what their thirst called for: water. Because I love them.
What about the really little ones, who don’t realize what value there is in being hydrated? Loving parents offer them water, even if they don’t realize they need it.
Parents supply water, call to them to come and drink, come and dunk, come and be showered.
Because they’re running, jumping, switching activities, and staying too long in the sun. They’re moving fast, chasing that freedom from schedules and structure. They don’t realize they need something.
Do you? Do you realize when you’re lacking something?
DO YOU KNOW YOU’RE THIRSTY?
In a world that has us too long in the heat, too long chasing one thing and then another, we forget what we need. That basic need for water.
Water, the thing we cannot live without.
You ever hear people talk about how long a human can go without water? I looked it up. Some say 3 days. Some say 3 weeks. But what they say ultimately is the same: Water is vital.
Without it, we will die.
I know that in Scripture there is a lot of talk about water, about thirst.
No doubt it is the perfect metaphor for satisfying an absolute need, for sustaining life.
The Bible speaks of drinking water, of a spring welling up, of streams in the desert, rivers, of pouring water on thirsty land.
In Genesis 1 God said “Let the waters under the heavens be gathered together into one place, and let the dry land appear.” And it was so.
Psalm 23 talks about being led by still waters. Isaiah 55 calls to those who are thirsty.
And there are more.
From Genesis to Revelation, the necessity of water is held up as an important message.
And you know me, and what I had to do. Because I wanted to see what the Bible said about water, about thirst.
Yep.
I wanted a list, a collection of the mentions of water and thirst.
And I was completely overwhelmed with the response.
It actually left me breathless, seeing it all in one place like that.
Here, let me show you:
John 4:14 ESV
But whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again. The water that I will give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”
John 7:37 ESV
On the last day of the feast, the great day, Jesus stood up and cried out, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink.
Isaiah 44:3 ESV
For I will pour water on the thirsty land, and streams on the dry ground; I will pour my Spirit upon your offspring, and my blessing on your descendants.
Revelation 22:17 ESV
The Spirit and the Bride say, “Come.” And let the one who hears say, “Come.” And let the one who is thirsty come; let the one who desires take the water of life without price.
Matthew 25:35 ESV
For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me,
Psalm 63:1 ESV
A Psalm of David, when he was in the wilderness of Judah. O God, you are my God; earnestly I seek you; my soul thirsts for you; my flesh faints for you, as in a dry and weary land where there is no water.
John 7:38 ESV
Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, ‘Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.’”
Isaiah 49:10 ESV
They shall not hunger or thirst, neither scorching wind nor sun shall strike them, for he who has pity on them will lead them, and by springs of water will guide them.
Psalm 42:1-11 ESV
To the choirmaster. A Maskil of the Sons of Korah. As a deer pants for flowing streams, so pants my soul for you, O God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When shall I come and appear before God? My tears have been my food day and night, while they say to me all the day long, “Where is your God?” These things I remember, as I pour out my soul: how I would go with the throng and lead them in procession to the house of God with glad shouts and songs of praise, a multitude keeping festival. Why are you cast down, O my soul, and why are you in turmoil within me? Hope in God; for I shall again praise him, my salvation …
Revelation 7:16-17 ESV
They shall hunger no more, neither thirst anymore; the sun shall not strike them, nor any scorching heat. For the Lamb in the midst of the throne will be their shepherd, and he will guide them to springs of living water, and God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.”
John 19:28-29 ESV
After this, Jesus, knowing that all was now finished, said (to fulfill the Scripture), “I thirst.” A jar full of sour wine stood there, so they put a sponge full of the sour wine on a hyssop branch and held it to his mouth.
Exodus 17:6 ESV
Behold, I will stand before you there on the rock at Horeb, and you shall strike the rock, and water shall come out of it, and the people will drink.” And Moses did so, in the sight of the elders of Israel.
Matthew 5:6 ESV
“Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.
Psalm 69:21 ESV
They gave me poison for food, and for my thirst they gave me sour wine to drink.
Isaiah 55:1-2 ESV
“Come, everyone who thirsts, come to the waters; and he who has no money, come, buy and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and without price. Why do you spend your money for that which is not bread, and your labor for that which does not satisfy? Listen diligently to me, and eat what is good, and delight yourselves in rich food.

Please do it, and be breathless with me at the calling of Christ to our deepest need.
STOP, AND ASK YOURSELF IF YOU’RE THIRSTY
Because you might not realize it.
How incredibly loving our Father is, to call us to him, to remind us of our thirst, and to supply what we need.
ASK WHO ELSE IS THIRSTY
In a world that offers people all the wrong answers for their needs, how do we show them where the relief is? How do we talk about water?
The metaphor is that we point to Christ, beckoning in Scripture with all kinds of water.
The reality is that we carry the truth with our words and actions. We meet them in their dryness with news about relief.
We speak of healing, of hope, of eternal life.
We tell them they’re thirsty. Gently, kindly, helpfully. We invite them to taste truth.
Without Christ, they will die.
THEY WILL DIE.
Essential water.
There is no question that our world is walking away from the life-giving water.
Events have drawn people toward the desert, into the shadows, into fear and hopelessness.
A Look Back At 2020
This blog was started in February 2020.
What occurred in those weeks was unprecedented.
That season in our memory is a blur for most of us.
Suddenly as a novice blogger, I was challenged with a worldwide pandemic, and a worldwide quarantine.
All my plans were set aside, and each week I tried to reach out with encouragement, ideas, and hope.
I was eager to serve my tiny group of readers with helpful information. With encouragement.
I needed it desperately, and knew others did also.
And an awful concern emerged:
We all were seeing something we knew would have long-term consequences: young people isolated.
We weren’t wrong.
For those who have experienced the damage, I see your burden.
Who Is Thirsty?
- Those young people who struggle with losing their way during isolation are thirsty.
- Those ravaged by illness and loss of loved ones are thirsty.
- Those who feel abandoned are thirsty.
- People trapped in slavery all over the world are thirsty
- People who harm others for their own gain are thirsty.
- The leaders who imagine they control the universe are thirsty.
People, and groups of people. They’re thirsty.
Some know they are thirsty. Others are oblivious. Still more claim they are not.
See your thirst, and satisfy it.
GO to those who are thirsty.
TELL them of the water.
SHOW them Christ’s love.
EXPLAIN salvation.
SUMMER WITH CHILDREN
As I think about Summer, and children at home, and thirst, and difficulty, I have looked back over those posts from 2020. The first ones I ever wrote.
I often go back and do some editing and updating on old posts, because, …well, let’s just say I had a lot to learn. (I hope I will always know that!) And these still need that kind of work.
If you’d like to see 10 Ideas for What To Do Out of School (Or 10 More Things To Do With Kids At Home), check them out. They are still good ideas. And they bear the marks of the time in which they were written.
Consider your Summer, and the people around you. Join me in praying that God’s call to the lost will be heard.
