EASY SUMMER LEARNING FOR KIDS

It’s not a dream! You could add this into your schedule easily, little reminders to help with relationships and integrity.

By now you’ve had about a week or two out of school, and you’re figuring out what you will do. On ordinary days, special days, and (the worst) rainy days.

There are plenty of kid activities already on the blog, so let’s not repeat those. You can access every single one with the links near the end of this post.

Instead, look at some actual (realistic) goals for the Summer.

In the South, it sounds like this:

It’s replacing “Shut your mouth” with “Are you being discreet?

It’s saying, “Do what is right, and live at peace” instead of “Don’t make me come in there again.”

It’s about leveling up, being able to operate at a better standard. It’s about modeling and training for a behavior that conforms to expectations.

Which sounds impossible.

But it’s not.

SUMMER LEARNING GOALS

So what are we trying to accomplish?

Summer is prime time for gentle discipleship, and you are likely feeling the tug between chaos and calling.

Is this you? Looking for…

  • Relief from this mental load
  • Hope for my kids’ hearts
  • Confidence that what I do is Spirit-led, not Just “busy work”

Are you pinched for time, but not wanting to waste it?

SUMMER LEARNING, THE DETAILS

We are planning a fun and growing Summer in so many ways. Here’s what’s on the agenda here at Grammye’s:

  1. SUMMER WORK assigned by school. It takes just a little time each day, and they usually are willing to get it finished and move on to leisure activities.
  2. A WEEKLY MOVIE. Regal is offering (again) their Summer Movie Express. It’s a great deal. The first showing, a couple of days each week. Tickets are $1, and the snack tray is $4. Even for the adult.
  3. GENERAL SPORTS REFINING. The basic skills for baseball, basketball, or whatever sport yours love. It can be something you work on a little each day.
  4. A FIELD TRIP TO A SURPRISE DESTINATION. I already know what it is, but I’m not telling.  If you’d like to provide a surprise to your kids or grandkids and you’re in Georgia (possibly the westernish side), email me and I’ll tell you. (But not if you’re a kid. Not telling you.)
  5. ONE TRIP TO Billy Beez, the indoor playground they love. We’ll come home exhausted but so happy.
  6. SKILL BUILDING for ordinary tasks: tying shoes, using a table knife, understanding the meaning of words like order and tidy and time management.
  7. OVERALL BEHAVIOR FOCUS. And what does that look like? General coaching, and presenting ideas. And I’m doing it through printables.

What does this accomplish? A mountain of things. Confidence in skills, better knowledge of how things work, character development, and happy memories to reflect on.

So let’s talk about #7, the behavior focus, and the printables.

EASY SUMMER LEARNING WITH PRINTABLES

I’ve got a set of 7 printable pages. Some short, some long, some scripture, some definitions. Some illustrations.

These are all truths that I’d love to pour into their hearts while they are with me.

I’m putting the set in my Etsy shop. But for you, here on the blog, they are free to all my subscribers. (If you don’t want to subscribe, no hard feelings.)

View them in either place, and see if you think they can give you something valuable to review with your precious ones.

I really like to use words like honor, respect, integrity, maturity. But do they know what I’m talking about? I also like to talk about God’s promises, provisions, and principles.

Do you think it helps to give them a picture, or a word picture? (Or maybe it helps us!)

Children really do look at what’s displayed on the wall. So let’s put stuff there that matters

Display Your Summer Printables

I’ve found this thing I’m trying. It’s a flexible felt cork strip that comes on a roll. It’s about 1 inch wide, and it’s thick. So I don’t have to pay for or mount a huge bulletin board. Just these strips.

And I’m not going to adhere the whole thing, but I’ll attach it so that it pleases the wall-protecting man who lives here. Then I can display these pages (one a week or all at once).

I’ll also have room for their wall art and stories they’ve written. (We’re using writing prompts!)

Alternatively, these printables could be displayed on the message board DIY that I have here on the blog.

But… The message board — it’s made to display only one page at a time. 🤔 And I want to have them all visible. I’m definitely going for the one-inch strip.

Here. I’ll show you.

So that’s what I’m doing with them.

And, my friend, 😄 right there you can see the “Pinterest” version, neatly displayed on a perfect wall.

Then you see the “Grammye” version, displayed on those heritage/vintage genuine authentic Circa 1980 oak-paneled walls I still have in my den. I know all about the option of painting it, but we just aren’t ready to tackle it.

(And I may have overestimated the amount of display room that 94 inches of felt would give me. I used the entire roll, cut in half. Each half displays 5 sheets vertically. If you’re going with that method.)

Now, if you paid attention to the list of goals, and you know me, there is…

SOMETHING YOU SHOULD KNOW

I might be laughed at for #3. Working on sports skills. There is not an athletic bone in my body. No team competition spirit. The “run-for-the-win” portion of my brain is not there. People tried, but it was of no use.

I could never letter in a sport. Diagramming sentences, maybe. Not athletics. Ever.

But, you know what?  I have listened to enough coaches and teachers to know that the skills can be taught, even by an unsporty grandmother. And about this, I’m not kidding.

We have had so much fun getting better at dribbling a basketball, at hanging in there after missing the basket 20 times in a row.

Better at hitting a baseball, at understanding game strategy.

Even better at playing Sorry without tears.

Better.  Because adults coach “better.” Including you.

You came here for ideas, honesty, or encouragement.

And there’s this really important thing I get to remind you of:

You don’t need any credentials to do any of these things. All you need is YOU.

Those kids need you to keep assuring them they have the ability to learn, to improve, and to excel.

EASY SUMMER

Mama, those words (“Easy Summer”) just don’t match on some days. 😏Right? Like opposing magnets that won’t get near each other. “Easy” and “Summer.”

You know what I’m talking about:

Days are busy, schedules can still be hectic, and everyone is adjusting to the weeks out of school. It’s burning up outside, and your whole house is a hot mess.

Every task is squeezed out by other tasks, and most stuff just doesn’t get done. Like, remember that afternoon outside when you realized you had forgotten your deodorant? 🫢 (Whoops. That was me. Not you. Sorry.)

Fatigue is an issue — for the kids and for you. And your healthy diet has left the building.

In a world that values accomplishment, and “keeping up,” you’re not.😟

But come with me, just for these weeks, to a place where children are loved, and encouraged. Where they learn to respect others, and accept what is given or planned. Where they look back and remember the moment when you were completely with them in the fun of the moment. A place you provide.

Catch yourself, before you complain, and change the climate from burdened to privileged.

Because you’re the solution.

Remember that your job, your real job, is to teach them to be champions, or leaders, or friends.

To show Christ to them. In words and actions. (And printables.)

The good news?

Bringing all these things to the table means you don’t have to be the hero.

Just the coach, the driver, the cook, the procurer, the explainer, the helper, the cleaner, the soother, the moderator, and the financer. (Because, being a hero is just too easy.😄)

Oh, we will be tired. We already are. But for such a good reason. Like my sister says, “Get out there and make some memories.”

And like I say, remember your deodorant.

You’ll be tired. But you’ll survive.

And at the end, something will have happened.

A heart thing that has more value, more heritage value, than you expected.

So let me tell you how to get the printables, if you want them.

(Then I’ll tell you how much I love you. Because I do. Then I’ll link to all the many activities you can do this Summer or anytime.)
