Memorizing Scripture the Easy Way

I heard you. You can’t. I know. You’re too old,  or not visual, or not enough of something else. I know, because I’ve said it myself. 😉

I won’t make you listen to the entire book (“The Little Engine That Could”), but I need to repeat the punch line. “I think I can, I think I can…” You CAN, and you will see progress the very first day.

This memorization approach is so different, so effective, and so easy, that you will find success much more quickly than with other techniques.

PLEASE just take a look at this method. It’s designed to help you in gentle stages, with no time constraints, no competition, and no pressure. And it works

So for just five minutes, open your eyes and lay down your resistance. Just for five minutes.

Thank you.  Because I know something about you.

You’re way busier than anyone should be.

You’re spinning a lot of plates, and filling a lot of needs.

There simply is not enough time in the day to get things done.

Thanks for agreeing to read. I’ll give you the logic, the reason, the method, and a free printable to get started.

And I PROMISE it’s something you can do with no time sacrifice. That’s the best part, right?

Why it Works

I’ll explain the method, and then show you.

The reason it works is this: You get to write your notes in your hand.  Sort of.

Notes are written on a hand. It’s just not yours.

It works because

  • you can remember if you have notes.
  • and then later you can remember most or all without the notes.

Do you know what ETA means? Sure. Estimated Time of Arrival.  How about IRS? Internal Revenue Service. (Could have left this one out, right?) Knowing lb means pound, or USA is United States of America, these are easy. Automatic, right? You can look at a group of letters and know what they mean.

And, if you can remember “The early bird gets the worm” or “A stitch in time saves nine” or how to answer the phone for your boss,

then

your claim to be unable to memorize is… a little leaky. Maybe even… DOA.

The point?

If you can do that, you can do this!

Abbreviations, initialism, even acronyms like NASA are helpful to us. We immediately picture the organization or the entire name or the concept in our “mind’s eye” even seeing just the letters.

This method uses a very similar principle to help you get from reading to reciting. It’s the FLOEW method. And that means First Letter Of Each Word. Don’t worry. You don’t have to memorize those letters. And you definitely don’t have to memorize the first letter of each word.

You’ll just use them to remind you of the entire phrase.

If you’re skeptical or not interested, please read one more thing before you go. It might change your mind…

How many times do I need to look at a passage of Scripture?

         No. Limit.

There is no limit on looking at Scripture. We need to be immersing ourselves in Scripture. And sometimes it’s last on our list.

What if you set out to read something repeatedly, even if you had no intention of memorizing?

Here’s the important thing I want you to read:

Memorizing Scripture is NOT about reciting for an audience. It is about introducing the Word of God into our long-term memory. It is about looking at it for more than a cursory glance. Seeing a block of Scripture multiple times a day will fulfill God’s command to dwell on His word. Dwell, even if you are afraid you can’t memorize.

What’s the big secret to memorizing Scripture?

The Scripture Memory Tool. This is a printed page that contains the Scripture passage, the FLOEW prompts, and the instructions for how to use it.

You can click on the image below and you will be taken to a page to download and print it. Why don’t you give it a try? It’s free, pretty, and it works. What more could a person want?

The PDF above is a free printable, just download it and give it a try.

And (surprise!) You can even save a PDF on your iPhone. I had no idea.

Here’s how, the simple (I hope) explanation:

On your home screen (somewhere) is a blue folder on a white background, called “Files.”  I had stashed this in a group of unused icons. When you download the PDF from this post (or an email), you’ll get the “share button” which is the square with the up arrow. (For me it’s the “do-something” button.) Click that, and select save “On My  iPhone”, and also select “to files” if you get that option. Then when you go to the blue folder, it’s there.

So Let’s Do This!

For me, a printed page posted where I will see it is often a big help.

So I’m printing this to put at eye level somewhere. I’ve also got it on my phone.

If you want to become inspired about memorizing Scripture, please check out the links below. You get a fresh look at the “why,” and then the “how” isn’t so important.

There’s  a LOT of looking online in preparing a post. A lot of research, a lot of refining, and a lot of fact checking. It was a big surprise that this method is not promoted more.

What I found for you:

My search for people who use this method led me to Suzanna at “Wonder-Filled Days” who uses it, and she explains it well. Here’s a link to her post about it. She’s on Pinterest also. (Like me! Did I tell you I’m on Pinterest?) While you’re at Suzanna’s blog, check out her Waldorf Perpetual Calendar. It’s beautiful, so captivating, and so are her other printables.

A good blogger should always try to share a great resource with you, some jewel that was buried among the vast internet and almost got missed. Today please check out three more worthy articles that helped me get it together on memorizing Scripture.

First is John Piper’s “Why Memorize Scripture?“. This is from the Desiring God ministry. There is so much there.

Second, a group devoted to memorizing Scripture, called Scripture Memory FellowshipHere you’ll find a very good list of reasons for memorizing.

For reluctant folks who are still convinced they can’t do it, please check out this article about the purpose of memorizing Scripture from Sovereign Grace. This is where you find out about the reason we need to make this effort.

God seems to always use times of discouragement to point us to Himself. At the very point in time I was accepting the realization that I had neglected my time with the Word, I heard my grandson softly humming “It’s me, It’s me, Oh Lord, standing in the need of prayer.”  🤨

Check out some of my other posts in Inspiration and Confessions for more about my shortcomings and my discoveries.  I’ll be preparing more printables. Be sure to download the one above

And how about another, Romans 12:12. Just click on the image below to print it.
