Finding time for yourself is a huge challenge for tired moms.

When Can Moms Carve Out Time For Themselves?

Let’s get really practical about when a mom can carve out time for herself, even in the busiest season. The key is not waiting for big chunks of time (which rarely appear), but looking for pockets of margin you can claim.

“Pockets of margin?” That’s a new phrase, right?! It’s clear this won’t be a weekend getaway or even a night out. More like a quick taste when the bowl is almost empty.

And, why am I saying “carve?”

Because (as you know) it takes the precision of a surgeon to actually locate and separate these tiny snippets of time.

What do I hear about moms? That they have absolutely no time to themselves.

You may be discouraged at the reality of motherhood — how consuming it is. And you are right — it is.

Still, there are ways to arrange your days to take advantage of moments.

Let’s do something:

Acknowledge the reality, then find a solution.

And I want you to remember that sequence. As a mom, you’ll be doing that every day for the rest of your life.

It doesn’t have to be a “bad” reality. Just a place that you can make better.

When Can Moms Carve Out Time? 6 Ways

You’re about to see six suggestions for carving your way to a little personal growth time. Not because I’m bossing you around, but because you’re so desperate for it: Time for yourself.

Not selfish indulgence. Just some minutes to think, plan, pray, problem solve, or rest.

Here we go:

  1. Early Morning — Before the House Wakes Up

  • Even 10–15 minutes can set the tone for the day.
  • Pair it with something you already do (coffee, shower, Bible reading).

👉 Tip: Prep the night before — set out the Bible, journal, or walking shoes.

  1. Nap Time / Quiet Time
  • If kids are past naps, enforce “quiet time” (books, puzzles, independent play).
  • Use this time for rest, prayer, or one rejuvenating activity — not chores.

👉 Tip: Give kids a basket of “quiet activities” they only get during this time.

Pinterest Moms Time 6 tricks
  1. During School or Childcare Hours
  • Instead of filling every free minute with errands, reserve a little slice for yourself.
  • A walk, devotional reading, or creative project can recharge you.

👉 Tip: Block it on the calendar like an appointment.

  1. Evening Wind-Down — After Bedtime
  • Use the first 20 minutes after kids are asleep for something that brings life.
  • Not screens that drain, but soul-fillers: journaling, stretching, reading, prayer.

👉 Tip: Set a “no chores after 9 pm” boundary once or twice a week.

  1. Little Pauses in the Day
  • 2 minutes while the pasta boils, 5 minutes when the kids are playing, 10 minutes in the car line.
  • These micro-moments add up.

👉 Tip: Keep a “refresh list” (quick activities that restore you: deep breaths, Scripture cards, a song, a hot tea).

  1. Shared Family Solutions
  • Swap childcare with a trusted friend or neighbor for 1–2 hours a week.
  • Ask spouse or older kids to take a short shift so you can step away.

👉 Tip: Frame it as family health: “When Mom recharges, the whole house benefits.”

Those are six times when moms can carve out time for themselves.

But before you go, my friend, all is not as safe as it appears.

You’re mindful of protecting your children. Let’s also protect you.

Carve Out Time For Mom, But Be Careful…

Yes, I’m encouraging you to claim some time.

But I want to caution you about something else.

Things Not To Do

Let’s be clear: This isn’t an invitation to develop a second life away from your family.

You have a family, a home, possibly a job, and a set of goals and circumstances already. The purpose of this enrichment is to make all that stuff better, not to escape from it.

Imma hold your hand while I say these things:

  • Don’t go taking on a new commitment, a new set of responsibilities, or some meaningless interest that takes even more of your precious time.
  • An escape into alcohol, infidelity, shared discontentment, or some other sneaky betrayal will ruin everything you have built.  Even worse, once you’ve followed this awful process the first time, you’ll repeat it. Just don’t.
  • These “found” moments are not to break promises or evade responsibility. They are for your good as a mom and/or wife. Don’t run away from the responsibilities that are yours.

I’m sorry. Really. To say it all so hard like that. It looks so ugly in print, telling you the traps that await you.

But I promise, there are plenty of discontent people looking for someone to join them.

Come sit down, they will say. Drink a glass of wine, relax, and let’s criticize our husbands, complain about our children, and become more discontent together.

And where do you think that will take you?

Before that invitation ever comes, go ahead and know this will not solve your problems or improve your life. When this is the event, don’t attend.

And remember why we’re even talking about this:

We’re asking when a mom can carve out time for herself, but not for the wrong reason.

Carving out this time is for a good purpose, one that is noble and worthy and heavenly.

It’s to enrich your family which will bring you immense satisfaction over many years.

Not to run away from them.

Running away.

If that’s what you think you want, you are being deceived. And the price of taking the bait is sometimes devastating. Put the wine glass down and go home. Find a mentor who will remind you of what’s at stake. Make up your mind to acknowledge the reality and find a solution.

You’re here, and I am so glad about that. I’m saving all kinds of things for you, because I know how hard it can be, and I know the joy that awaits you. You can have a life of contentment and achievement, even when the hours seem just the opposite.

Moms are always trying to make things better. Little boo-boos, hard days, and distant futures. That’s right. The minivan you’re driving is heading straight to eternity by way of Jesus.

Run that race, Mama, lay aside every weight, look to Jesus, lift your drooping hands, strengthen your weak knees, because your discipline will yield the peaceful fruit of righteousness.  (You’ll find all that in Hebrews 12 and much more.)

Sometimes you need more concrete guidance for this monumental responsibility (or is it “momumental?”) of being a mother. I sure did. Getting clear on your motive, your philosophy, and your method will settle a lot of confusion.

James Dobson’s practical advice helped me so much with my own children. You can buy the most popular three books in the Parenting Collection. It was sad to see he reached the end of his life this week. His wisdom was valuable and timeless.

Shepherding A Child’s Heart by Tedd Tripp is a book that helps you get back on track with parenting, rooted in goodness.

Don’t Make Me Count To Three is another helpful book that gets us out of the frustration and right into guidance.
