Why Third Grade Is Such A Big Deal

January 20, 2026

Why is third grade such a big deal? And why doesn’t anyone talk to parents about it?

That’s exactly why you’re here.

Pinterest Reading Awareness How Parents Can Help

Hang on:  I want to say this gently before we go any further: the purpose of this series is not to criticize teachers, schools, or families, nor is it to suggest that parents should take on the role of classroom instructor. Reading education is a complex field, and thoughtful educators do not all agree on every method or approach.

My hope is simply to help parents understand how reading skills develop over time — and why that understanding is becoming increasingly helpful as schools place closer attention on reading milestones and progress. With a clearer picture of what children are learning and when, parents can partner with their child’s school with confidence, recognize growth without panic, and support their children in small, meaningful ways at home — without pressure, fear, or guilt.

At its heart, this series is meant to bring parents, teachers, and children onto the same page, working together toward confident, capable readers.

“Why Third Grade Is Such a Big Deal”

Hey friend — remember how I mentioned that big shift from learning to read into reading to learn?
Let me tell you why that moment matters so much.

So here’s the part most parents don’t know:

Third Grade is DIFFERENT.

By the time kids reach third grade, school suddenly changes. Not on the calendar — but in the way every subject is taught. The books get longer. The vocabulary gets harder. Even math starts sneaking in big word problems that need strong reading just to understand the question!

Pinterest Read Third Grade Leap

If a child isn’t reading confidently by the end of third grade, the rest of school becomes an uphill climb.

Not because they aren’t smart. Not because they don’t try.

But because they simply are weak in one or more reading skills, the five steps we talked about in the previous post.

What’s happening now is this:  Reading becomes the doorway to all learning.

It’s vital. And the early years are the place to catch up.

Beyond Grade 3: The Struggle of Teachers, Students, and Parents

Researchers say that children who are behind in reading at third grade often struggle to catch up later, simply because everything else keeps moving forward. It’s like trying to board a train that’s already in motion.

Maybe you’ve seen this: Suddenly a child is struggling with schoolwork. Each assignment is a frustrating task. Everyone wants to help you, but they don’t seem to actually help.

It’s not because they don’t want to. They do.

It’s because the show must go on and the show is Third Grade.

That’s why third grade is such a big deal.

Reading skills were last year. And no one wants a “label” this year.

But if we don’t identify the missing skills, we won’t be able to fix it. Third grade is a super-important year for every student. And although teachers know all about it, parents often don’t realize it’s a milestone.

Reading Help Is Coming

This is why so many states (and so many schools) are focusing on reading in the early grades. They’re trying to give kids the strongest start possible — before the content gets too heavy to carry without solid reading skills underneath.

And this leads to something really important… what schools are doing about it.

That’s the really exciting thing I want to share with you.  When I heard the buzz about this, I couldn’t wait to share it. News that happens among educators, but doesn’t really reach people like us — parents and grandparents.

We’ve covered the importance of the early grades. And we had that big list in the post last week, explaining the 5 building blocks of learning to read.

Now you know that there’s this turning point coming. Making sure our children can make the transition from “learning to read” to “reading to learn.” It makes you want to have a full understanding of how the education is getting accomplished. And what your part is, as a parent.

What’s next? This whole gigantic pivot that has been happening over the last 5 (and even 10) years — putting a little pressure on everyone to move in a new direction.

I’ll tell you the exact news I heard, the spark that lit me up and made me want to share.

The next post explains exactly what is happening. I’ll fill you in on the history, the current position, and the exciting future.

It’s not just history or my story either. It’s your story. Your child’s story.

Over the next few weeks I’ll provide resources in case you want to do more learning about the support and encouragement you can provide to your child.

Why the passion? Because reading is necessary for everything. And if we don’t support the learning when it’s being offered (grades K-2), the window closes fast. When your child’s teacher reviews reading progress with you, it’s super important.

Reading together at home is a proven difference-maker. Reading together daily is taking a giant step for your child. And that’s a way you love them.

Reading and phonics workbooks are amazing. Discover it all together, the building blocks to the joy of reading.
