This really is the best portable basketball hoop and I’ll tell you why. It’s about quality, easy assembly, and features.
If you’re struggling to find the best basketball hoop to set up at home, you’re in the right place.
Needing a Portable Basketball Hoop for Driveway
Bet you want a basketball hoop. Either your first one, or a replacement one. How do you know which one is best?
The differences aren’t always clear.
We had an old one, poorer quality, and finally the clear backboard began to crack and chip away from the center. Once that starts, it isn’t long before you have small shards of it falling each time you play. Not to mention an enlarging hole in the backboard.
The search for a replacement wasn’t easy. It looked like a huge price jump — from the $300+ range we wanted to spend to over $800. Sometimes they do go on sale.
So why the big gap? I’ll tell you.
One thing is the material. The backboards look alike but the material is different. To keep the cost down (like we did the first time) they use a material called polycarbonate for the backboard. They may say it’s shatterproof but I’m not sure I want to depend on that again. The more expensive backboards are acrylic, which is said to be more durable.
Are they?
I will let you know about that in a few years. 😉
So yes, you want quality. You don’t want to be buying a replacement in a few short years.
And you really dread the assembly.
But there’s great news. Spalding has upped their game and it means we win. And not in overtime.
The Spalding Momentous EZ Assembly 54″ Basketball Hoop
This is the one. You’ll see that little circle emblem on the box (“Assembles in 30 minutes or less”) and your heart rate will go up. You’ll check reviews, look at videos, and it all seems like a dream. 30 minutes??
Because you’ve done this before. It’s never easy. Never.
Until now. 30 minutes!
I’ll be honest: For us assembly was more like an hour. An hour for everything. We watched assembly videos, we unboxed, we slowly moved through each step. All in an hour.
And it was totally not stressful.
Lord we thank you for this basketball goal, and for preserving our lives through its assembly.
Instructions were clear, the size is substantial, and it’s sturdy.
It has that triangular piece at the base (the video calls it the “front cover”) that helps a little with getting the ball back to the player.
The Big Thing: THE ASSEMBLY
I won’t share the details of assembling our basketball goal a few years ago. The old goal we had. I’ll just say it was difficult. Confusing. Stop-and-go. Do-over. You know what? Downright torture. You’ve done these projects. So you know what I’m talking about. When no crime is actually committed but you know you’re close.
But this one, the new one — it comes partially assembled. When you look at the video and you see it rising up from the base, you almost hear the Rocky theme in your head. It’s marvelous.
We had zero confusion, zero disagreement, and zero frustration. The parts are grouped by step, clearly labeled and numbered. You open each small bag when you reach the step, and the pictures in the instructions are actually clear.
There isn’t any time when you ask what a part is — it’s all easy to understand. If we needed to assemble one again, I’m sure we really could do it in 30 minutes.
And looking at it now, all put together, it’s beautiful.
So let me tell you three things that stood out as helpful during the assembly process.
Best Portable Basketball Hoop — Details That Will Help Build It
1. I already said one thing: Watch the videos before you start. The ones from Spalding are very helpful. And there are others on YouTube. Why watch videos? Because it’s so innovative it’s almost illogical. You’ll have a better idea of what comes next.
Although the assembly of the Spalding 54 in Portable Momentous Basketball Hoop is much easier than the “not-easy” ones, there are still multiple steps that must be done in order.
Bottom Line Number 1: Watch videos and read instructions before you even start.
2. Next, the base for this thing is 32 x 54 inches. Which is kinda big. Go ahead and decide where it will be. Exactly. And put it there. Ours is just off the driveway. Not on the pavement.
Our old base was smaller, so once we had removed it we just pulled up a little more grass, took some time to enlarge the area and made sure to get the ground level. (Remember — you can use your iPhone level tool for that!)
The first thing they want you to do is fill the base. And you have to. Otherwise it won’t be stable when you lift the whole heavy “post assembly” out of the little “nest” it’s lying in, recessed in the base.
And, you won’t be able to move it easily once it’s full.
So place it, and fill it up. The base holds 36 gallons of water. That’s just over 300 lbs. That weight keeps it stable when you’re moving the post up and attaching the backboard.
(You can use sand. We didn’t. Also, there is a “gel” you can buy to fill the base, instead of water. We didn’t. Also some say to add antifreeze to the water in the winter. We’ll see about that.)
Bottom Line Number 2: The base has to be in place and weighed down first. Before you start the rest.
3. Have the second person helping. It’s safer for the people and for the product. Not only are you double checking the steps, you’re reaching for the parts, holding things in place, inserting screws/bolts from another direction. Some people said they did it alone. But the recommendation is to have two people.
Bottom Line Number 3: Use two people for safety and precision.
What’s In It For Me?
If you’re asking for yourself, the answer is “the best portable basketball hoop.” That’s what you get.
If you’re asking about me, it’s always helpful if you buy anything here through my link. It won’t cost you anything, but the vendor will drop a coin in my tin cup for sending you.
But did I get a free basketball hoop to try out and tell you about? Nope. Paid for it just like everybody else.
So if you’re thinking about it, take a look.

Having an article like this would have been helpful to us.
What else was cool? This little basketball pump. It runs on batteries. Pumping up tired basketballs is a breeze with this.
What else? This colorful soft grip youth basketball. It’s just fun. And the surface really is grippy.
Did you know Spalding makes basketballs that are more rugged for outdoor play? The “STREET” Basketball is one. The manufacturers label each model for indoor, outdoor, or both. That helps.
You probably know this: Men’s basketballs (and youth over age 15) are size 7. Each younger age in the league has size-appropriate basketballs (mini, 4, 5, and 6). Here’s a chart on the Spalding website.
Also, I told you the videos were really helpful.
VIDEOS TO HELP YOU
Here’s the Spalding Video. It’s great. Every detail. Very complete, very clear.
A different video, one of those quick videos — takes only one minute. 😂 But watch it! You’ll see how it’s partially assembled right out of the box.
Wondering if you should buy this hoop?
We were, too. I don’t take spending money lightly.
I’m telling you this: It was worth it. Happy basketball boys, and no-tears assembly.
You can spend less, you can spend more. But if we were talking right now, I’d say get this one.
Have a basketball summer! We will be.
It’s so nice to have outdoor play time again after winter. And there’s a lot more play time when school’s out, right?
If you’re looking for more activity ideas (indoors and out) here are a few.
School ends here the week before Memorial Day. It’ll get here fast, and I’m actually kind of excited. Got a few activities and plans going around in my head. Summers are shorter now, at least when they’re out of school. Just two months.
So just like my sister says, we’re gonna get out there and “make some memories.” I hope you do, too. 😊
